Yahtzee traces back to a dice game called Yacht, reportedly played by a Canadian couple on their yacht with friends sometime before the 1950s. Game entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe acquired the rights and trademarked the name Yahtzee on April 19, 1956, and the E.S. Lowe Company sold more than 40 million copies before Milton Bradley bought the company in 1973. Hasbro owns the game today and has kept the core rules essentially unchanged since 1956.
Each turn, a player rolls five dice and gets up to three rolls total, setting aside any dice they want to keep between rolls and re-rolling the rest. After the third roll (or sooner, if a player chooses to stop early), they have to record a score in one of 13 category boxes on the scorecard, things like three of a kind, a full house, a small or large straight, or the category the game is named for: five dice showing the same number, worth 50 points, the highest score available. Once a category is used, it's locked for the rest of that player's game, so part of the strategy is deciding when to bank a mediocre roll into a category you're unlikely to fill later versus gambling on one more re-roll.
