SCHYLLING Lava Squish & Flow

3.9 · 305 reviews

This one combines a squishy shell with a slow-moving liquid center, so squeezing it gives a different kind of sensory feedback than the solid doh-filled NeeDoh toys nearby in this lineup: more flow, less bounce-back. At a 3.9 rating from over 300 reviews, it runs a bit lower than Schylling's other fidgets in this catalog, worth knowing if you're comparing options from the same brand.

Highlights

  • Squishy outer shell with a slow-flowing liquid center
  • Made by Schylling, the same brand behind the NeeDoh line

About SCHYLLING Lava Squish & Flow

Schylling is the toy company behind NeeDoh, and it also holds the license for the LAVA Lamp brand, the same one behind the classic motion lamp a lot of parents remember from their own childhood. Lava Squish & Flow belongs to that LAVA lineup, not the NeeDoh line: instead of a piece of dough-like filling that springs back into shape after every squeeze, this one holds a liquid center with small globs floating inside a smooth, stretchy shell. Squeeze the base and the globs drift and swirl rather than bounce back, a genuinely different kind of sensory feedback from the solid squeeze toys that make up most of this fidget and sensory lineup.

The listing puts it at 5 x 3 x 3 inches, made of plastic with a non-sticky, smooth and stretchy exterior, and it ships in an assorted "Multi" color mix, so the one that arrives is a bit of a surprise. Amazon's own directions are simple: squeeze the base to get the slow, flowing movement of the liquid globs inside, and the whole shell glows in the dark after some light exposure, a detail several buyers call out as their favorite part. It's rated for ages 3 and up, and like any small toy with liquid-filled parts, Amazon's safety notice flags it as a choking hazard for kids under 3 and recommends adult supervision.

This one fits kids (and adults) who like the hypnotic, watch-it-move appeal of a lava lamp more than the squish-and-bounce of a stress ball, and it doubles as a fun little desk or nightstand novelty thanks to the glow-in-the-dark effect. It's worth going in with realistic expectations on size, since more than one review below describes it as noticeably smaller in hand than the product photos suggest, and on longevity, since the liquid center can cloud up with repeated use over time.

The Honest Take

What We Like and What We Don't

What we like

  • Genuinely different sensory feedback from the doh-filled squeeze toys nearby in this lineup, more flowing lava lamp motion than squish-and-bounce
  • Glows in the dark, a feature multiple buyers single out as the best part of the toy
  • Ships in an assorted "Multi" color mix, so a group of siblings or classmates can each end up with a different look
  • Smooth, non-sticky plastic shell that wipes down easily between uses

What holds it back

  • Runs small in hand, more than one reviewer describes it as only a couple of inches, smaller than the photos suggest
  • The liquid center can turn cloudy with repeated squeezing over time, a complaint that shows up in reviews from several different countries
  • A few buyers found the flowing motion underwhelming once the novelty wore off, calling it anticlimactic
  • Lower average rating than Schylling's better-known NeeDoh cubes and balls elsewhere in this catalog

Is This For You?

Who Should (and Shouldn't) Buy This

Get it if…

you or your kid like the hypnotic, watch-it-move appeal of a lava lamp more than a squeeze-and-bounce stress ball, want a glow-in-the-dark novelty for a dark bedroom or car ride, or are shopping for a small stocking stuffer, party favor, or grab-bag item where a couple of inches of size is expected.

Skip it if…

you want a toy that holds up to daily heavy squeezing for months without clouding, if size matters and you were picturing something closer to a full-size lava lamp, or if you already own a NeeDoh from this lineup and are looking for that same dough-like squish rather than a liquid-filled one.

The verdict

Lava Squish & Flow is a fun, low-cost way to get a mini lava lamp's hypnotic motion into a squeezable toy, and the glow-in-the-dark effect genuinely delights a lot of the kids and adults who buy it. Just go in knowing it's small, closer to a fidget-sized novelty than a display piece, and that the liquid inside can cloud up with heavy use, so it earns its spot as a stocking-stuffer or party-favor pick rather than a long-term daily fidget.

What Real Buyers Say

One of our favs!!! Absolutely adorable and two ways to squish and fidget! Will definitely get more! Flowing on the dark is a plus! The little balls look like lava flowing! Love love love!!

It's so adorable! You can use it like a stress ball, but instead of squeezing the life out of it, concentrate on mimicking the motion of a lava lamp and let your worries melt away, even cooler in the dark when it glows

They are definitely alot smaller than I expected. I was also expecting it to be more squishy. It's actually filled with water. You can squeeze the bottom to make the lava balls spin around in it. But really it's kind of anticlimactic. My 12 year old was disappointed. Definitely not worth the price.

Very, very small! A waste of money and very small. I only gave it a one star because I had to give it something in order to post this honest review. The picture make you think is bigger. Please, don't waste your money. This is a cool idea but it's only like two inches. Don't last too long without getting cloudy.

Good fidget toy! It has a really easy mechanism but is rather small for the price, after a few months the top section becomes very cloudy and hard to see and the water reduces so it's not as smooth

Addictive, but it fogs up quickly. (Translated from a Spanish-language review.)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lava Squish & Flow actually made of?

It's a plastic shell filled with a liquid center that holds small floating globs, according to the listing's own product details (material type: plastic, item form: smooth and stretchy). Squeezing the base is what sets the liquid and globs moving, similar to how a lava lamp works when you tip it.

Does it really glow in the dark?

Yes. After some light exposure, the outer shell glows, which is one of the features buyers mention most often when they leave a review.

What age is it recommended for, and is it safe for young kids?

The listing recommends it for ages 3 and up, but the safety notice flags it as a choking hazard due to small parts, so younger kids should only use it under direct adult supervision.

How big is it really?

It measures 5 x 3 x 3 inches according to the listing, but several buyer reviews describe it as feeling smaller in hand than that, closer to a couple of inches of actual squeezable surface, so it's worth setting expectations before buying it as a gift.

Is this the same thing as a NeeDoh?

No. It's made by the same company, Schylling, but it belongs to their separate LAVA Lamp brand line rather than the NeeDoh line. NeeDoh toys are filled with a dough-like compound that springs back into shape, while this one has a liquid center that flows and drifts instead of bouncing back.
